As we head into this last part of the year, I tend to reflect on all that has been accomplished. Certainly, starting a project tends to be the easiest part of an activity for me. However, as the months go past, and the number of tasks stretch out ahead of me, I may encounter overwhelm, or challenges that seem insurmountable and sometimes even fear. I may ask, “how am I going to move on from here?” This is where we might define the difference between a small win and a lasting legacy. It lies in our committed focus to our vision and in completing what we started.
In life, just like in a race, it is not how we start, that defines success. It is ultimately our perseverance and our determination to finish that leaves a lasting impression. Whether we are working toward a personal goal, completing a project, or navigating a career milestone, there is a process that ensures we sustain and build upon our success so that we will finish strong.
- Build on What’s Working: We can take the time to review what has gotten us this far. When we acknowledge every small success along the way, we become positively charged and motivated to see our vision become a reality. We know that not every run or every task will goes as planned. Sometimes, challenges arise that seem to put us behind. In fact, once we have learned what doesn’t work, we put ourselves back onto the path of success.
- Stay Resilient: Even if we have stumbled, the challenge isn’t over until we decide it’s over. Every competitor trips up at some point. It is how we choose to recover and get back on our feet that defines the strength of our vision. When progress seems slow or our goal seems distant, keep moving!
- Maintain your Focus: Keep your goal clearly in sight. Remember why we started this project and what we are trying to achieve. Let your vision guide you to a strong finish. That time, effort, and focus we have clung to for so long is more essential at every stage of the marathon. In life, the final phases of a project or goal is our chance to make any final adjustments that will highlight our personal and professional abilities.
- Finish Strong: Finally, crossing the finish line is about more than just getting to the end. It’s about how we carry ourself through that last stretch and what we have accomplished along the way. Crossing the finish line deserves celebration, but it’s not the time to lose focus! Runners know to keep moving even after they finish to avoid cramping up. Similarly finishing strong means carrying your momentum forward and considering how to sustain this success beyond the finish line.
In the end, the difference between a weak win and a lasting legacy is all about how you finish. Whether you’re running a literal race, working on a personal project, or navigating your career, finishing strong is a testament to your focus, giving your best effort when you didn’t think you had it in you, and crossing the line or achieving your vision with intention. Your legacy will be defined not by how you started, but by the strength, resilience, and commitment you showed as you finished.
